Yes, We Said Vista...

The Good Doctor may be insane, but yes, in this case we want Vista.  Read that again, it's true...

Why Vista?  Vista is much more IPv6 friendly than previous Windows versions.  Yes, XP could do IPv6 but the Vista implementation is more complete.  Linux and Mac OS can do IPv6, but each has its own features.  For our purposes, Vista really does work -- talk about the wow starting now!

Really..... it is the right choice....

Setup

Fortunately, this is the easy part.

  1. Go to Control Panel
  2. Go to Networks and Sharing
  3. Click on Manage Networks
  4. Double-click on your local ethernet adapter.  A new property box will open
  5. Click Properties and authorize it.
  6. Select Internet Protocol IPv6
  7. Make sure both Obtain an IP Address Automatically and Obtain a DNS Address Automatically are checked.
  8. OK and exit.

At this poiint, Windows Vista has been told to ask the Radvd for its data.  If all works:

Start a command shell (cmd)

  1. Type ipconfig /all
  2. If everything works, the local interface will now have an IPv6 address.  That address will have the prefix 2001:470:d:60c::/64.
  3. The values beyond 60c may look like a random series of hex values, but in fact, they are the 48 bits of the Ethernet MAC address.  Autoconfiguration now works!
